IPv8 Device Compliance

The IPv8 draft defines device compliance tiers to describe what different classes of devices are expected to support.

Tier 1 covers end devices. These are hosts that participate in the network but do not provide switching or routing functions.

Tier 2 covers layer 2 network devices. The draft includes expectations for switching behavior and mentions PVRST in the spanning tree section.

Tier 3 covers layer 3 network devices. These devices participate in routing behavior and therefore have a larger role in IPv8 control and validation.

The draft states that PVRST is mandatory in the device compliance section. This is part of the layer 2 behavior expected in the proposal.

The draft includes NIC broadcast rate limits. Earlier wording in -00 says NIC rate limits, while later versions use NIC broadcast rate limits.

Compliance text can be sensitive to wording. Read Original Draft -02 when checking whether a device behavior is described as mandatory, recommended, optional, or prohibited.
